How to Measure for Moulding
- 1). Use the tape measure to measure the edge of the opening where the trim is going to be placed.
- 2). Draw a picture of the opening and record the lengths of each edge on the drawing.
- 3). Determine the overlap the molding will have into the opening. When trim is placed around a door or window frame there is often some overlap onto the frame, hiding the frame's edge.
- 4). Measure the width of the trim.
- 5). Calculate the length of each piece of trim by: Opening length - # of junctions * (Overlap - trim width). For example, a 48-inch opening, with two junctions (like on the top of a door), an overlap of 1/4 inch and a width of 2 inches would be: 48 - 2 * (1/4 - 2) = 51.5 inches.
