Are Electronic Cigarettes Safe?

With the advent and growing popularity of smokeless cigarettes in recent years many have asked the question, "Are electronic cigarettes safe?" There are numerous assertions by advertisers that e-cigs are safer to use than their tobacco counterpart. And the logic behind the assertion seems to have some validity. But unfortunately there is not much actual scientific proof to back up the claim that smokeless cigarettes are safer, even if they are.

A study was made in late 2010 by Michael Siegel at the Boston University School of Public Health suggesting that e-cigarettes may be safer than tobacco cigarettes and that they may possibly be helpful in avoiding diseases that are generally attributed to tobacco smoking. Information about the study was published by the Journal of Public Health Policy in late 2010. More information is on their website.

The chemicals found in tobacco cigarettes were taken into consideration and compared to the chemicals found in e-cigs. Those found in smokeless cigarettes were not chemicals know to have raised serious health worries in the past. The conclusion (or maybe the assumption) was made that electric cigarettes are safer than tobacco cigarettes even though evidence is lacking that smokeless cigarettes are absolutely safe to use, even though the level of carcinogenic chemicals are much lower.

The real problem in concluding that e-cigarettes are safer, however, is the lack of supporting evidence that they are safer, and not on evidence that they are hazardous to use. It hasn't been proven that using smoke-free cigarettes is harmful to health as has been determined concerning tobacco cigarettes. It is know, however, that nicotine is addictive and should not be used excessively. Bur carbon monoxide and carcinogens are much lower in no-smoke cigarettes.

It was suggested in the report previously mentioned that smokeless cigarettes may be better at suppressing the cigarette cravings than other stop-smoking devices, such as the nicotine patch. The smokeless cigarette looks and feels like a cigarette and tends to suppress the craving to smoke longer than other devices.

Are electronic cigarettes safe? There has been much ado by advertisers about the safety of smokeless cigarettes as compared to traditional tobacco cigarettes and assertions that they are an excellent way to help one quit smoking. Unfortunately scientific evidence has been lacking to substantiate the claims. But there does now seem to be some positive opinion coming from the scientific community that would give at least some credence to the notions.
