    • 1). Take out any dangerous or flammable items. Store gasoline, sharp tools or chemicals in a shed, for example, to make the area safe. Keep in mind that guests might smoke in the temporary room or find chemical smells irritating. Shift items such as boxes of junk, old wood and never-opened paint cans to a corner or wall area.

    • 2). Use bed sheets and cloth creatively. Place a small nail at the corner of wooden window frames and hang a sheet for a curtain, for example. Toss a couple of king-size sheets over a large pile of clutter. Hang a tarp cloth to divide a heavily cluttered area from a neat space where furniture will go. Buying premade temporary room divider walls as another option.

    • 3). Sweep the floor where a bed or chairs will fit. Use a sponge mop to go over the space as well, so you take care of loose dust. Find an old area rug stored in an attic to fit over a dirty section of concrete floor space.

    • 4). Bring in plastic lawn furniture and a roll-away bed. Wash the lawn chairs with a water hose and broom, allow pieces to dry and bring them into the garage. Fit the bed into a corner area and use fresh sheets and a bedspread or comforter to give the bed a clean look and feel. Install a card table, covered by a plastic table cloth, along with four folding chairs. Add a small television and refrigerator, if those are available.

    • 5). Add some accessories. Find one or two lamps to include in the space. Place these lamps on shelves or tables to give the temporary room a home-like feeling. Bring fresh bed pillows and one or two throw pillows into the garage space.
