    • 1). Draw the shape you want on a large piece of paper to create a template. For example, if you wanted to make a Christmas tree, you would draw a simple tall triangle. Cut the shape from the paper.

    • 2). Lay the felt on a flat work surface and outline the paper template on the felt with the marker. Cut the shape from the felt. Lay the felting mat on your flat work surface and place the fabric on top of it. This should be a different color than the shape you cut out and will be the background color. Arrange the shape in the center of the felt. Flip the shape over if you have any permanent marker lines showing.

    • 3). Punch the needle up and down into the cutout felt, starting in the center of the shape. Work your way slowly around the edges of the cutout until the felt is secured to the background.

    • 4). Use the jelly jar lid as a template on the other colored felt and trace circles if you want to add other shapes to the felt. You can also create triangle and star shapes using a ruler. Cut the shapes from the felt. Arrange the assorted shapes onto your cutout. Punch the needle up and down in the center and around the edges of each smaller shape added to your design. Continue until you are satisfied with the look of hanging.

    • 5). Flip the felt so the background is on top. Fold 2 inches of the background felt base back from the top of the wall hanging. Glue the top edge of the folded fabric onto the back of the background felt, but leave an opening in the fold. Place the rod in the opening you just created. You can add ribbon ends to each of the dowel ends if you so desire.
