How to Become a Social Worker in Florida
- 1). Get a bachelor's degree. According to the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Handbook Guide, becoming a social worker in Florida requires a 4-year degree in social work. Florida Atlantic University (FAU) offers a BSW (bachelor's in social work) degree. Coursework for this program includes basic psychology, sociology, and biology. Other Florida schools may also require basic civic and government classes as well.
- 2). Consider an advanced degree. The U.S. Department of Labor advises that many employers, especially those in the private or clinical sector, want people with a master's or "MSW" degree. Most state universities in Florida offer such programs. Focus on administrative social service policy classes, if you know that you will want to eventually serve in some supervisory capacity.
- 3). Take a test and apply for a license. Florida social workers need to get a "licensure for clinical social work" or "LCSW." The National Association of Social Workers Florida Chapter (NASW-FL) says first-time license seekers should prepare for their state exam by attending test preparatory classes. Contact the Florida p.r.n to find out about classes in Broward, Dade and Palm Beach, as well as other classes possibly in your own area.
- 4). Get training from the Florida Department of Health (FDH). The FDH has various training classes available online for those who want to become a social worker in Florida. The University of South Florida sponsors the online Aids Education Training Center (AETC). It has information about rules that govern how Florida administers social services to HIV and Aids patients.
