What Is Bluetooth Adapter?

    Identification

    • Bluetooth adapters are small devices that connect to the computer externally via the computer's USB port. They are installed using a special CD that contains drivers that allow the computer to decode and transmit Bluetooth signals, as well as software that allows the computer to manage all the different Bluetooth networks you use.

    Installation

    • To install a Bluetooth adapter, plug it into your computer, and then install the CD that came with it. Then open the Bluetooth software and begin syncing devices. When you sync a Bluetooth-compatible device with your computer, you create a link that allows the two devices to interact. For instance, if you sync a Bluetooth keyboard, you will be able to type on the keyboard several feet away and the computer will be able to read the incoming data wirelessly.

    Syncing

    • To sync Bluetooth devices to the adapter, open the Bluetooth management software you installed from the CD, and put the adapter in "discovery" mode. This will allow it to find Bluetooth devices. Then put the device in "sync" mode. You will need to refer to your owner's manual for specific instructions on how to do this, as it will vary by device. Once a link has been formed, you will see a notification pop up on your computer screen letting you know that a new Bluetooth connection has been formed.

    Limitations

    • Bluetooth adapters have some limitations when compared with hard-wired Bluetooth connections. Most adapters will only be able to handle three to four Bluetooth devices at a time. Once you have reached the adapter's limit, you may experience missed signals and issues with synced devices getting pushed off the network without your consent. Prevent this from happening by reading your Bluetooth owner's manual and keeping your Bluetooth connections confined within your adapter's limits.

    Warning

    • Although Bluetooth technology is fairly secure, a specialty type of hacking known as "BlueJacking" has evolved in recent years. This type of hacker can pull sensitive information from Bluetooth networks, so it is important not to use Bluetooth networks to beam or transmit anything you wouldn't mind sharing.
