Picture framing courses really put you on the right track when you are trying to frame your own pictures at home.
You can attend a local college course or some picture framers offer weekend workshops but one of the best ways to learn is to do a home framing intensive.
Home picture making classes are usually available on DVD or via a membership site.
The advantages of studying how to build frames this way is that they are self-paced.
When you are in a classroom situation often you can get left behind if you don't fully understand the techniques being shown, whereas a home study class gives you the opportunity to review the instructor's advice as many times as you need to get the technique down pat.
When I was starting out it was fortunate that I had good mentors to teach me the techniques that had been passed along from framer to framer.
After obtaining my trade qualifications I began teaching adults how to frame pictures at a local college.
I then went on to write and teach students as part of the Australian technical colleges training program.
The type of things you can learn from a picture framing class includes
  • measuring and calculating sizes
  • how to square up boards and frames
  • how to cut matting boards
  • how to calculate wastage when cutting frames
  • techniques for joining frames
  • types of picture frame glass and when to use certain varieties
  • cutting glass
  • fixing artworks to matting and frames
  • fitting techniques
  • finishing off techniques
  • how to display pictures
Although picture framing is quite straightforward when you know what you are doing it can be a real minefield to a beginner and experienced picture framer alike.
That is why it always pays to learn and practise new techniques over and over until you master the craft.
The benefits of learning picture framing are truly rewarding.
You can impress your family and friends with your new found skills.
You can progress to making frames for financial reward or even establish a custom framing business.
You should always continue to learn and hone your skills so it is important to join a picture framer's master class or picture framer's network.
One of the networks that I have membership to gives me the opportunity to answer questions posted by other members and occasionally when in need of some input for an item that I've not framed before the answers provided really help to get the job done right.
Membership sites also provide updated content and new framing techniques so you can progress from framing at a basic level to becoming proficient.
Documented techniques and videos of difficult or challenging framing projects are often posted providing insights when you require assistance.
Alternative methods are always welcomed and discussed by your mentors.
The reason all great athletes, experts, entrepreneurs succeed is because they have coaches and mentors.
A picture framing mentor can really kick-start your career or hobby as a picture framer.
Start your journey today by enrolling in a framing class or seek out a good mentor to help you achieve success.
