How to Attach a Vanity Top to a Cabinet
- 1). Shut off the water supply to the sink before disconnecting drainage and water supply lines. Place a bucket under drainage pipes to catch any drips.
- 2). Remove any screws attaching the vanity top to the base cabinet or the wall studs. Use a utility knife to score along the edges of the old vanity where the top may have been previously caulked. Insert a crowbar under the vanity top and use leverage to pry the top off.
- 3). Repair any damage to the wall area before installing the new counter top. This can be done by applying joint compound with a trowel and scraping it smooth. Let the joint compound dry and sand the area smooth.
- 4). Place the new vanity top onto the base cabinet and check the level. Lift the top and apply a bead of construction adhesive around the edges of the base cabinet and nailer. Replace the vanity onto the cabinet, applying downward pressure. Be sure the new top is flush to the wall on the backside. Screw the vanity top to the base cabinet and wall studs for stability.
- 5). Install the sink, faucet and other hardware. Apply a bead of caulk around the edges of the vanity, sink and walls to seal out any water. Reattach water supply lines and turn the water back on to test for leaks.
