There has never been a better benefits package available for active military, reservists and veterans than the one that exists right now.
This article will give you a summary of the four basic programs available.
Note that this is a starting point to whet your appetite.
The web is filled with sites that discuss this all-important topic.
Let's get started.
Montgomery GI Bill This is the gold standard of Military education assistance.
This program pays up to $51,300 in tuition and related expenses to anyone who has served two or more years in the military.
There is no need to be currently active, just in possession of an honorable discharge and a high school degree or its equivalent before starting college.
Post 911 GI Bill This version of education assistance pays for full in state tuition for those who qualify.
The service person must have been on active duty post 9/10/2010 and maintained a minimum amount of service time to qualify.
The benefits are scaled down if those in service spent less than 36 months in active duty.
Select Reserve GI Bill This program is for reservist only.
It provides $11,000 for those reservists willing to make a 6-year commitment.
While this may seem like a long time, keep in mind this is only one weekend a month.
Reserve Education Program (REAP) This program is for reservist and National Guard personnel who have been called to active duty due to war or emergency.
It provides up to a very lucrative $40,000 for your higher education, based on minimum amount of time at war.
It is scaled down if combat time is less than 24 months.
Above is a "cliff notes" summary of the base programs available through the GI Bill.
We wish you good luck and thank you to the US Military for protecting our borders.
