How to Present Your Invention

    • 1). Decide what kind of visual aids you will give your audience. Potential buyers will be more interested if they can clearly visualize what you are selling. If possible, bring a prototype with you so you can demonstrate how it works.

If a prototype is impossible, create either a digital visual aid or a paper presentation. PowerPoint is a common program used for presentations. You can also make a portfolio to hand out to each individual.

    • 2). Introduce your invention in a succinct manner. This should be a paragraph or two that summarizes the invention. Be creative, clear and concise in your introduction. You want to catch their attention and give them a reason to keep listening.

    • 3). Demonstrate how the product works. This could be verbally, using the prototype, or through a video aid. If appropriate, show how user-friendly the product is.

    • 4). Talk about the costs. Tell your audience how much it will cost to produce the item and what the sales value will be. Break down the numbers. Use graphs and charts to visually demonstrate how the product is financially viable. At this point, talk about how the item will be packaged and the costs involved in packaging.

    • 5). Give reasons to buy the product and talk about who the target consumer is. Some investors specialize in certain products or a specific demographic. If this is true of your audience, explain how your product is appropriate for the consumers. Stress all the points that would appeal to your investors' consumers.

    • 6). Conclude the presentation by summarizing the key points. At this point, you can discuss how you came up with the idea, why it is important to you and how this product couldchange someone's life. This tactic gives a human element to the presentation.

    • 7). Provide all of your contact information. This should be on the portfolio, but also hand out cards that will be easy for investors to refer to. Include the name and contact information of the lawyer who is handling your licensing information. Reaffirm how you can be reached.
