All-girl summer camps give young women the opportunity to make friends and participate in new activities, while spending time in nature. Craft classes are a camp staple, but they need not be typical to appeal to girls of different ages.
. - Making crowns may appeal to young girls, and with some modifications, older girls may also find it fun.
Provide plastic headbands and sparkling pipe cleaners of different colors. Bend and attach the pipe cleaners to the headbands to resemble tiaras. Girls can look and feel like a princess even at camp. Another fun craft for this age group is creating a pet rock. Girls can find interesting rocks with smooth surfaces to paint to resemble ladybugs, monkeys or other animals. Googly eyes and pipe-cleaner antennas or legs can be added. - By the age of 9, girls may be interested in makeup, fashion and beauty. By mixing scented oil, food coloring and Epsom salt, girls can make scented bath salts for themselves or to give as gifts. Friendship bracelets are also fun to make at girls’ camps, where new friendships are formed every day. Friendship bracelets can be made by braiding brightly colored strings.
- Teenage girls can make a tote bag out of two bandannas. Simply cut strips along three sides of each bandanna and tie the edges together to create a seam. A separate bandanna can be attached to each side of the open end to create a handle. Using the same concept, blankets can be made from two pieces of fleece of any size that are tied together along the edges.
