How to Make a Trapping Snare
- 1). Wrap a string, or thin rope, around your left index finger once and tie a simple knot to create a loop. Make sure to slide your finger out of the loop. The string should not be longer than about 12 inches long.
- 2). Slide the other end of the string through the loop but not all the way through. Leave about more than 2 inches but less than 6 inches of string on one side of the loop.
- 3). Tie the end of the string that doesn't have the loop to a low-lying branch where small animals such as rabbits or squirrels are likely to pass your snare. Use two simple knots to secure the snare to the branch.
- 4). Open up the excess string you left on one side of the loop so that it stands open in the area you expect your prey to pass. Use two Y-shaped twigs to hold the snare up and open. When your prey passes through the snare, its body will catch it. The snare will tighten around it and, as it tries to pull away, the snare will get tighter.
- 5). Leave the snare alone for a few hours, at least two or more hours if possible, and come back to check on it. If there is an animal caught in the snare, Make sure it is dead before you release the snare. If you are not wanting to harm the animal, then simply release it from the snare by pulling the string away from its body. Approach live animals with caution as a bite can contain viruses and bacteria that may cause health issues.
