How to Do Finish Carpentry
- 1). Measure between the walls at the ceiling. If the measurement is longer than the material on hand, cut a miter where the two pieces will meet.
- 2). Place the crown mold against the ceiling, top of the wall and secure with 8d finish nails. If more than one piece is required, cut miters in the pieces where one will overlap the other for a smooth seam.
- 3). Cut an inside 45-degree angle with the electric miter saw on one of the pieces of crown mold. Following the edge of the profile, cut the miter off with the coping saw. This will butt the previously installed piece of crown mold and give the illusion of a mitered corner.
- 4). If more than one piece is required, cut miters in the pieces where one will overlap the other for a smooth seam. Fill all nail holes and corners with wood putty.
- 1). For window seats, measure the inside width of the window and add the width of the casing twice. Measure from the window to the wall and mark the widow seat accordingly.
- 2). Center the measurement of the inside of the window and mark the window seat. Cut the window seat with the jigsaw so that it will bump next to the window and hang over the wall at least 1-inch.
- 3). Measure the longest pieces of the casing first. Make the lengths of each piece where they will leave a ¼-inch reveal on the jambs.
- 4). Tack the longest pieces in place, but do not drive the nails all the way in. Next, measure the distance between the longest pieces. Be certain to allow for the ¼-inch reveal on the jambs.
- 5). Once all pieces are fit, drive the nails in and set the heads. Fill all the holes and miters with wood putty.
