Multiple inputs on the 788 accept mic and line level signals. An HiZ switch also allows direct plug-in of electric guitars. Stereo outputs for mixing down are included through individual connectors. An S/PDIF digital output makes it straightforward to send audio to CD and DAT recorders for two-track masters. - -R is one of the two main formats for burning CDs (the other is +R). -RW is the rewritable version of -R. Tascam made their own CD burners with -R format drives. In these and any other -R drives connected to the Tascam 788, -R format disks must be used.
- Any external CD burning drive can be connected via SCSI to the Tascam 788. Remember, however, that any drive connected to any computer needs the accompanying driver installed to communicate with the CD drive. Therefore, it is best to use -R and -RW format drives with the Tascam 788, to avoid the need to update any drivers in the Tascam 788 itself.

SCSI (Small Computer Systems Interface) is a standard for communication between computers and peripheral devices. SCSI connections are most commonly used with hard disks, CD drives and tape drives. Every device attaches to the SCSI bus in a similar manner and between eight and 16 devices can be attached to a single bus. This is why the Tascam 788 is equipped with the SCSI connection.
