How to Make Oval Braided Rugs
- 1). Draw an oval onto the carpet padding in the size that you want your rug to be. Cut the shape out of the padding using the scissors.
- 2). Tear or cut the fabric into long, thin strips. Each strip must be about the same width; however, the length of the strips is not important. A good width for the strips is 3 to 4 inches wide.
- 3). Place the ends of three strips of fabric of different patterns or colors together. Braid the three strips together. When you get to the end of a strip, overlap a new piece of fabric on top of it and continue braiding. Braid the fabric until you have a rope that is several feet long. The length of the braid will depend on the size of your carpet pad and how tightly you wind it.
- 4). Pour some silicone adhesive onto the center of the carpet pad and place one end of the rope braid into the glue, holding it securely until it starts to adhere. Wind the rope around the center in an oval shape, applying adhesive beneath it on the padding as you press the braid down.
- 5). Trim off any excess fabric and glue the end of the fabric rope beneath the pad to hold it in place. Allow the adhesive to dry completely before using your new rug.
