How to Care for Your Hawthorn Tree
- 1). Spread a 1-inch layer of organic mulch in a 2-foot diameter around the base of the tree in the early spring. Reapply a 1-inch layer of mulch in the fall. Keep the mulch 6 inches away from the base of the tree to avoid trunk burn.
- 2). Water deeply with a soaker hose when the top inch feels dry. Deep watering helps the tree develop a strong tap root. Water more frequently when the tree is blooming, during warmer months, and when berries are setting.
- 3). Fertilize every other spring with an organic balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer. Mix the fertilizer according to the packaging directions and apply in a 2-foot diameter around the tree, avoiding the 6 inches around the trunk. Water thoroughly.
- 4). Prune your hawthorn in the winter or early spring. Remove weaker inner branches to allow more sunlight to reach the interior. Cut back any branches sprouting from the root level and remove any suckers growing from the roots.
- 5). Remove any diseased twigs, leaves or branches to discourage cedar-hawthorn rust. This fungus causes leaves to yellow and drop. If your tree is infected, apply a fungicide to the foliage and trunk, following the packaging instructions.
