Cebu City Tourist Information
- In addition to knowing the Filipino language, Cebu residents also speak Cebuano among themselves. They use English for education and business interactions.
- The best weather runs from December to May, when it's dry. Coolness reigns from December to February, while the hot season arrives in March and lasts until May. The rainy season starts in July and can bring so much precipitation that it restrains the ability to travel.
- The peso, which divides into 100 centavos, represents the currency of the Philippines. Exchange almost any foreign currency at the banks, hotels and authorized dealers in the city. Cebu City also accepts major foreign credit cards at hotels and resorts, shops and restaurants. Tips to bellhops, waiters, taxi drivers, beauticians, porters and hairdressers run from five to 15 percent of the bill if no service charge is included.
- Don't wear sandals when attending special occasions. The locals consider wearing proper shoes a sign of respect for the event. Don't use the old OK sign of the index finger touching the thumb tip to form an O. To Cebu City residents, this gesture indicates money. Instead, use a thumbs-up motion to signal OK. Don't call a local resident by pointing your index finger upward because this is considered a little degrading. Beckon someone by moving your hand downward gently or say "pssst" instead.
- Take a jeep or bus at minimal fare or one of the widely available taxicabs to get around Cebu City. Unless you're a resident of Hong Kong or Taiwan, you can stay for 21 days without a visa as long as you have a valid passport. Passport holders from Taiwan and Hong Kong still need a special permit obtained from the Philippine embassies and consulates. Bring lightweight clothing to wear. Jackets can be worn for slightly formal occasions. Pack insect repellent, some comfortable walking shoes and a flashlight. For beachwear, bring along sun block cream and rubber slippers in addition to your bathing suit.
