How to Remove Old Windows From a Drive
- 1). Back up your data to an external hard drive or onto DVDs. The process to do a clean Windows install completely erases your hard drive, no data will remain after the old version of Windows has been removed.
- 2). Insert the Windows DVD and restart the computer.
- 3). Press any keyboard key to launch the DVD installer. You are asked to choose your language, region and keyboard setup. Accept the license agreement.
- 4). Select "Custom" installation. Click "Drive Options (Advanced)."
- 5). Select the drive containing your current (old) Windows installation. Typically, this is the C drive. Press the appropriate keys to delete the partition, then create a new one using the NTFS file system (Windows default). The exact keys and instructions are specified on the screen. Select the new, reformatted partition as the install destination.
- 6). Follow the remaining instructions to complete the install. Upon completion, the old copy of Windows will be gone, replaced by the new, upgraded Microsoft Windows.
