How to Stop a Dog from Climbing a Fence
- 1). Remove any material that assists your dog in its efforts to climb the fence. For instance, move any wood piles, toys, garden furniture or anything else the dog can stand on and use to boost itself over.
- 2). Block your dog's access to the fence by planting shrubs or hedges in front it. The vegetation will make it difficult for the dog to stand in front of the fence, let alone scale it.
- 3). Purchase and install a product designed to keep your dog from climbing the fence, such as the Coyote Roller. This product consists of spinning horizontal tubes placed at the top of your fence that will cause your dog to lose its footing and fall back down when it tries to pull itself up over the fence.
- 4). Squirt your dog with water when it attempts to climb the fence. The water will not only distract your dog, but will eventually teach it that when it tries to climb, it will be greeted with an unappealing blast of water. Your dog will likely eventually associate the fence with the unpleasant reaction and stop climbing.
- 5). Provide exercise for your dog once a day. If you allow your dog to burn its excess energy, it may not be compelled to climb the fence and see what else is out there. A majority of dogs that do not receive exercise become bored and perform destructive behavior, such as chewing or climbing fences. Give your dog toys, such as Kongs or those that the dog must move in a certain way to receive a treat, to keep its mind busy.
