How to Stop a Squeaking House Door Hinge
- 1). Remove the hinge pins: Place the head of a screwdriver under the hinge pin and lightly tap with a hammer to force the pin up. Grip the pin with your hands or a pair of locking pliers and pull the pin straight up and out. Remove and replace the pins one by one; do not remove more than one pin from the door at a time, or the door will fall off the frame.
- 2). Place a thick layer of paper towels or newspaper on a work surface. Spray the hinge pins with a degreasing spray. Wipe the pins thoroughly with a rag to remove old lubricants, dust and dirt. Sand rusty areas with fine-grit sandpaper and clean the pins a second time to remove bits of rust.
- 3). Apply the degreaser spray to a cotton swab and clean the inside of the hinge barrel.
- 4). Spray the hinge pin with a silicone-based lubricating spray.
- 5). Place the pin back into the hinge barrel and press it into place. If the pin does not slide smoothly back in, gently tap the head of the pin with a mallet. Repeat for each door hinge.
