Bike safety, as well as general bicycle laws, are a good chunk of the vehicle laws in the state of Michigan. While not all of these laws will apply in all situations, there is still a large tome that holds all the reference materials that bicycle riders may ever need to know. - According to the laws in the state of Michigan, any vehicle, whether it's a car or a bicycle, must signal appropriately when making a turn. For a left turn, the left hand and arm must be extended horizontally, For a right turn, the left hand and arm must be extended upward (often bent at the elbow) and for a stop or a decrease in speed, the left arm must be extended downward (also bent at the elbow). Failure to obey these laws and to properly signal may result in a fine.
- According to Michigan state law, it is illegal for a person who is riding a bicycle, motorcycle, roller skates, sled, toy vehicle or scooter to attach that vehicle to a streetcar or any other vehicle upon a roadway. The fact that this law still exists (257.659 in the Michigan state vehicle code) shows that at one point in time this must have been an issue that was common enough to present a real danger that needed to be prevented.
- While bicycles are often used to transport letters and smaller items, bicycle messengers must meet some prerequisites. Under no legal circumstances should a person riding a bicycle ever do so while carrying or attempting to carry a package that will make it impossible for him to keep both hands on the handlebars of the bicycle. Saddle bags or a basket attached to either the front or the back of the vehicle would be recommended.
