    • 1). Twist or fold your t-shirt to create a design or pattern. Use rubber bands to hold it in place.

    • 2). Pour two to three gallons of hot water each into three large buckets or tubs. Mix a different color of the liquid or powder dye into each of the three buckets or tubs. Wear rubber gloves to protect your hands from the dye.

    • 3). Place all or part of your t-shirt in the lightest of the three colors first and leave it in for between four to seven minutes. Remove the t-shirt when its color is slightly darker than what you want the finished product to look like.

    • 4). Rinse the t-shirt in cold water until the water runs clear. Ring it out and use an old towel to dry the shirt as best you can. It will not be completely dry, but should not be dripping wet.

    • 5). Repeat Steps 3 and 4 for the other two colors.

    • 6). Cut the rubber bands using scissors once you have finished dyeing the t-shirt. Be careful not to cut the shirt when removing the rubber bands.

    • 7). Wash the t-shirt either by hand or using a washing machine, making sure to use cold water. Hang the shirt up to dry or use the coolest setting on your dryer.
