How to File for Food Stamps in Pennsylvania
- 1). Go to Pennsylvania's COMPASS website (See Resources). Read the information on the main screen. The COMPASS system allows you to apply for not only SNAP benefits but also other benefits based on your situation.
- 2). Select "Apply Now" when you are ready to begin the application process. You will be asked many questions about your household, including the number of household members and their names, dates of birth and Social Security numbers. You must list all income, child support and assets. Complete the application and submit it. The process will take an average of 25 to 45 minutes.
- 3). Wait to hear from the Pennsylvania Department of Welfare. You will be contacted to schedule an appointment. Bring birth certificates and Social Security cards for all members of your household and any other documentation requested.
- 4). Watch for your electronic benefits card to come in the mail. When your application is approved, the state will mail you the card. Your SNAP benefits will be loaded onto the card, which you can use like a debit card at participating grocery stores. If you are not approved, you will receive a letter from the Pennsylvania Department of Welfare.
- 1). Locate the Pennsylvania Department of Welfare Office in the Pennsylvania county you live in by visiting dpw.state.pa.us (See Resources).
- 2). Visit the office to pick up the application. You can fill out the application there or take it home and return later. The application asks for information regarding all members of your household. You will be required to fill out information regarding income, assets and expenses, as well as many other questions. The department will use that information to determine your eligibility for the SNAP program.
- 3). Turn in the application and get an appointment time. Bring any required documentation to the appointment. Common required information is proof of identity, Social Security numbers for household members, proof of income and expenses.
- 4). Wait for the Pennsylvania Department of Welfare staff to process the application. Upon approval, you will receive an electronic benefits card, which you can use like a debit card at grocery stores. The Department of Welfare will send you a letter informing you of the amount you will receive monthly and directions on how to use your EBT card.
