How to Make Organza Table Overlays
- 1). Before you buy your fabric, measure your table and determine how large the overlay needs to be. Take into account how far over the edge of the tabletop you want the overlay to hang and be sure to add that length for all dimensions. (For example, if you have a table that is 5 feet long and you want an overhang of a foot, make sure you buy at least a 7-foot length so that you have enough for each end.)
- 2). Lay the organza out on a large, flat workspace and mark out the shape you want. Add a 1/4-inch seam allowance to each edge. Then, using sharp scissors, cut the fabric to size.
- 3). Fold and pin the edges over 1/8 inch all the way around. Repeat this so that no unfinished edges are visible. If you have corners, carefully fold over and line up the corners so they don't get too bulky. (If necessary, cut some fabric from the inner layer of the fold, but don't cut too much, as you want to make sure all edges are caught in the stitches to prevent unraveling.) If you have curves, clip notches as you go to help the curve turn, but again, leave no unfinished edges on the outside of the fold.
- 4). Thread your sewing machine or needle and sew the edges down all the way around the overlay. A short, straight stitch works well, but decorative sewing machine stitches, perhaps in contrasting thread, will also keep the hem in place nicely.
- 5). Iron edges carefully. Follow the instructions from the store if you got any, but if you didn't, use low heat and a pressing cloth.
