How to Wire a Garden Light
- 1). Run 10-gauge wire for the main lines that go from the transformer you will need to install to the light and use 12-gauge wires between lights to connect them together.
- 2). Slide a flat-nosed shovel into the soil where the wire crosses the lawn and peel back the sod. Bury the wires at a depth of 6 inches to prevent damage during lawn maintenance.
- 3). Mount the transformer box in a central location on a wooden post. Bury the post at least a third of it's length to prevent wind from knocking it over. You need to mount the transformer near an outdoor outlet. Adding a transformer box is highly technical and should be installed by a professional electrician.
- 4). Strip the ends of the 10-gauge wire leading to the transformer back 3/4 inch. Twist the frayed ends of the wire together and insert the ends into the wire terminals on the transformer. Do this for all the main lines.
- 5). Connect 12-gauge wires between the lamps using weatherproof wire connectors. Strip the end of the 12-gauge wire a 3/4-inch. Wrap the end of the 12-gauge wire together with the wire coming from the lamp with a waterproof wire connector. Turn the wire connector clockwise.
- 6). Plug the transformer box into the outside outlet coming from the wall to test the lights. A transformer box is a surge protector and outlet for the lights. The transformer box should be placed near an outside electrical outlet.
