How to Make a Dress-Up Skirt
- 1). Lay out the fabric on a flat surface.
- 2). Cut a piece of elastic two inches larger than the waist of the skirt.
- 3). Measure the fabric to be twice the length of the elastic. Cut the excess.
- 4). Use a pencil to mark the elastic and the fabric into quarters along the length.
- 5). Pin each quarter mark of the elastic to the quarter mark on the fabric, stretching the fabric to fit.
- 6). Place the fabric behind the elastic. The right side of the elastic should cover the right side of the fabric by 1/2 inch. Using a three-step zigzag machine, sew the fabric to the elastic 1/4 inch from the elastic edge. Stretch the elastic to be the same length as the fabric when you sew. Sew to the end of the elastic and cut off any excess fabric.
- 7). Match up the two ends of the sewn fabric and elastic, right sides together. Sew the seam 1/2 inch from the fabric edge using a straight stitch. Stitch the seam again using the 3-step zigzag in the seam allowance that is 1/4 inch from the fabric edge. This stitch is for reinforcement.
- 8). Cut the skirt bottom to be the desired length. Hem the bottom of the skirt by turning it back toward the wrong side of the fabric 1/2 inch. Stitch it using a running stitch 1/4 inch from the fold edge. Tulle does not need to be hemmed, and can be left raw.
