Design Awards: Cooper-Hewitt National Design Awards 2013
Each year, the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum hosts the National Design Awards, a program created to celebrate design in all its forms and to acknowledge its role as a vital tool in shaping the world. The 2013 awards go to 10 individuals and organizations who are showing the world the positive effects of good design.
And the winners are…
Lifetime Achievement: James Wines
James Wines is founder and president of SITE, a New York-based architectural studio that got its start in 1970.
Wines’ projects have included buildings, public spaces, environmental art, landscapes, master plans, interiors, video productions, graphics, and product design. An author and Professor of Architecture at Pennsylvania State University, Wines’ work can be found in 11 countries.
Design Mind: Michael Sorkin
Michael Sorkin is an architect whose New York-based firm – Michael Sorkin Studio – is focused on urbanism and green architecture. Sorkin is also president of Terreform, a non-profit group that focuses on research and intervention in issues of urban morphology, sustainability and equity. He has also authored and edited a number of books including Variations on a Theme Park, Some Assembly Required, and Twenty Minutes in Manhattan.
Corporate & Institutional Achievement: TED
Who doesn’t know TED? The non-profit organization that devotes itself to “Ideas Worth Spreading” began as a conference that brought together the worlds of technology, entertainment and design. Due to the overwhelming interest in the idea of connecting ideas, TED now empowers individuals to hold independently organized TEDx events.
In total, more than 5,900 TEDx events have been held in 1,683 cities.
Architecture Design: Studio Gang Architects
Studio Gang Architects Founder Jeanne Gang is a MacArthur Fellow who brought together the Chicago-based collective of architects, designers, and thinkers. Her method is to use architecture as a medium to achieve positive results for our very human experience. Studio Gang’s work has included skyscrapers and zoo environments and has been exhibited at the Venice Architecture Biennale and in various museums.
Communication Design: Paula Scher
Paula Scher is widely credited for having taken the art of graphic design to new heights. A principal in the New York office of the international design consultancy Pentagram since 1991, her work has included identity and branding systems, environmental graphics, packaging and publication designs for such prestigious clients as Bloomberg, the Museum of Modern Art, the High Line, the New York City Ballet, and Jazz at Lincoln Center.
Fashion Design: Behnaz Sarafpour
From the launch of her debut collection in 2001, Behnaz Sarafpour has been a name of note in the fashion world. Known for gracing women with a style of modern elegance, Sarafpour reimagined her refined runway style for the masses in 2006 when she joined Target’s GO International line. More recent collaborations have included Lancome and Earnest Sewn and her designs have been featured at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Museum at FIT.
Interaction Design: Local Projects
Local Projects is a media design firm that specializes in museums and public spaces. Founded by Jake Barton, the firm has a very impressive list of clients, including the 9/11 Memorial and Museum; Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum; and the Frank Gehry-designed Eisenhower Memorial. Local Project’s specialty is in interactive design for physical spaces and collaborative storytelling projects that find participants generating content as well.
Interior Design: Aidlin Darling Design
The firm that would become Aidlin Darling Design actually began around a woodshop in 1998. Partners Joshua Aidlin and David Darling focus on design that effects all the senses and have crafted their own studio as the hub for a network of like-minded builders, fabricators, artists, engineers, chefs, and more. The firm’s awards include a James Beard Award and two American Architecture Awards from the Chicago Athenaeum, as well as awards from the AIA, IIDA and ASLA.
Landscape Architecture: Margie Ruddick
Margie Ruddick is known for a 25-year career that took a groundbreaking approach to urban landscape design. Her plans work to integrate ecology, urban planning and culture and encourage the notion of nature in our cities. Her work can be seen in New York’s Queens Plaza and Trenton Capital Park on the Delaware River. Internationally, her work includes Living Water Park, the first ecological park in China.
Product Design: NewDealDesign
San Francisco-based NewDealDesign is a multidisciplinary design firm headed by Gadi Amit. The firm creates objects and experiences by teaming industrial, graphic and interaction designers with strategists and engineers. Among the notable products to come from this studio are the Lytro Light Field Camera, the Fitbit Wireless wellness trackers and the Netgear Platinum II home router.
