Hints for ESL Students for Reading Skills
- Do not try to read something that is more complex or difficult than your English comprehension. Even if you are an adult, you should read a children's book or a simple article if you have a limited vocabulary so you will not have to stop and constantly look up words.
- Read something that would be interesting to you in your native language. Newspapers in English are a good source of information written in a fairly simple style. Find a topic in the newspaper that will keep your attention.
- Look at the pictures, read the captions and try to understand what the article is about before reading it. Discuss this with others, if you are in a class. If you start reading with an idea of what will happen, it will be easier to focus on understanding each word and reading smoothly instead of stopping to try to put together the pieces of the story.
- If you practice reading at regular, frequent intervals, your English reading will improve. If you do not practice often, it will be harder for you to maintain your reading skills. Remember what you have learned, and improve on your skills next time.
