Line the floors along the edge of the walls with drop cloths or old newspapers. Tape off any baseboards or window trim with painters tape to prevent paint overflow. Paint over burgundy walls with a latex primer to cover the dark paint. Apply two applications of primer, if necessary. Paint over outdated wallpaper as well, using the same method. This can be successfully done with good results but it is very important to use only water-based latex primer and water-based latex paint on top of wallpaper. Any primer or paint that is oil-based can react with the wallpaper paste and your wallpaper will come peeling down.

Neutral colors go well with brownmodern living-room interior image by Elnur from Fotolia.com

Repaint walls with a neutral color, like taupe. There are many shades of taupe to choose from. Bring sample cards home from a paint store and tape them to the wall that has been primed. Leave the samples up overnight and look at the various taupe samples throughout the day in order to see how movement of light affects the shade. Remove the sample cards that you reject and you'll soon be left with the ideal shade. Pick a shade of taupe that is not too dark because, when placed on walls, taupe appears darker than a sample piece may indicate.

Remove burgundy decor items like curtains, lamp shades, rugs, candles, place mats, table runners, bedroom comforters and decorative pillows. Read design magazines and shop the home decor section of high-end department stores to see what styles are popular right now. Use a brown duvet cover to place over the current bedroom comforter, if you like. Install cream-colored sheers in the windows and intermingle brown curtains with the sheers. Consider installing brown leather or suede curtains (some imitation leather looks very convincing) on each side of the sheers for an updated look.

Pick an accent color for the room. Walls that are light can handle brown bedding, window treatments and furniture but brown itself needs an additional color to perk the room up. Turquoise and brown are popular at this time but brown also pairs well with orange, peach, yellow, teal and medium green colors. Try an old designer's trick: use a bright accent color that looks good on you.

    • 5). Replace or revise the burgundy items you have removed. Add a rug that has brown, tan and an accent color. The rug can be large or small but it will help pull together the look of the updated room. Replace lampshades that are burgundy with something in the accent color of choice or replace lamps altogether with modern lamps that are over-sized or unusually shaped to update a room as well.
