There are a variety of grants and scholarships that have been made available for those wanting to further their education.
Is there one that's right for you? First of all, you need to assess your situation and see which grant fits.
Are you in a place where a merit based grant would be the right choice, or should you be looking into a need based grant? If you are someone whose financial circumstances make paying for college or university impossible, then you should be looking into the latter.
A need based grant.
This grant is in place for those who would not be able to attend college without some form of financial aid.
So, does that mean that anyone who is short on cash would be eligible to receive this grant money? No.
There is a variety of criteria that must be met.
The following is not an exhaustive list of the criteria, but it does cover the most important.
Qualifying for a need based grant will depend upon the following: the number of dependants in your family, the number of those dependants that will be attending college or university, how much the family plans to contribute, the amount of the families assets (this is over and above income) and your own status as s student.
The need based grant is funded by either the federal or state government, most commonly the Federal Pell Grant.
Should you apply for and receive grant monies, do you have to pay them back like you would with a student loan? No.
This money is the equivalent of a gift.
You will never need to pay it back to the government.
