How to Make Soy Candles

103 9
These days many candle makers choose to make their candles out of soy wax instead of traditional paraffin wax because of the cleaner appearance they have when you burn them.
Although all candles give off soot, soy gives off white soot instead of black.
This is why so many people think soy candles burn cleaner.
Soy wax is also made from all natural materials, which is a bonus for the environment.
Soy and paraffin candles are very similar, especially to work with.
Both hold scent and color the same way, and the finished product looks pretty much the same.
Other than the difference in soot color, the main difference between soy and paraffin candles is that you don't want to use soy to make pillar, taper, or any type of novelty candles.
It's best to choose a different kind of wax if you decide to make these candles.
There's really no difference between making paraffin candles and making soy candles.
Both use a double boiler to melt the wax in, although you'll want to heat the soy wax to a slightly lower temperature than paraffin wax.
  1. Start by heating the wax to about 150 degrees Fahrenheit.
Keep a close eye on it as it melts, because soy wax tends to burn and turn yellow if you keep it at too hot of a temperature for too long.
  2. Add any color to your wax after it's melted.
  3. Take the wax off the heat, and then add any fragrance you desire.
A good rule of thumb is about an ounce, or slightly over an ounce, of fragrance oil for every one pound of soy wax.
  4. Get your wax to around 140 degrees Fahrenheit, and then pour it into your candle mold.
If your wax isn't hot enough when you pour it, your candle could crack.
