Description of Chandeliers
- Early candle chandeliers were used in 15th century medieval assembly halls. Gas chandeliers appeared in the mid-1800s, and many existing candle chandeliers were converted to gas during this period.
- The size and form of a chandelier can vary widely from a relatively simple pendant with as few as two arms to dozens of lights in a complex configuration. The largest is Oman's Grand Mosque Chandelier, which holds 1,114 halogen bulbs.
- Chandeliers can be made out of cast bronze, tubular brass, wrought iron, alabaster, crystal, timber and plastic, depending on the style and period.
- Traditionally, chandeliers are used in large rooms with high ceilings, where a large amount of illumination is needed. Today, chandeliers are used more as decorative elements and not only for illumination purposes.
- These days chandeliers can be used to decorate almost room, but the size of the chandelier should be proportional to the size of the room.
