How to Make a Rubber Lantern Keychain
- 1). Lay a piece of 12-inch by 12-inch inch wax paper onto a flat work surface.
- 2). Mold 1/4 cup rubber silicone craft putty into a ball. Press and form the putty ball into the basic shape of a lantern by hand. Cut the lantern with a craft knife to create the necessary angles.
- 3). Measure a piece of 5-millimeter craft wire to a length of 3 inches. Cut the wire to size with a pair of wire snips. Press the wire into a "U" shape. Turn the "U" upside-down. Press the prong ends of the "U" down into the top of the lantern to create the handle. Allow 24 hours for the clay to harden and air dry.
- 4). Apply a thin layer of oil-based primer to the surface of the lantern with a synthetic fiber brush. Allow three hours for the primer to dry.
- 5). Pour 1/2 cup mineral spirits into a small plastic bowl. Clean the brush in the mineral spirits.
- 6). Coat the lantern with oil-based paint. Allow four hours for the lantern to dry before handling or attaching it to your key ring.
