How to Germinate a Portulaca
- 1). Pour the seed starting mix into a bucket and moisten with water. Just add a small amount of water at a time so that the mix doesn't get too wet. Stir the soil with a stick or spoon as you add the water.
- 2). Pour the moistened starting mix into the gardening flat to within 1/2 inch of the top. Pat the surface of the soil with your hands.
- 3). Scatter the portulaca seeds over the surface of the soil. Portulaca seeds need light in order to germinate, so don't cover them with soil.
- 4). Mist the surface of the soil with water just enough to settle the seeds a little on the soil.
- 5). Place the flat into a transparent plastic bag and secure the bag with a twist tie or rubber band.
- 6). Place the flat on a heating mat set to 75 degrees F. Check the moisture content of the soil daily. If it appears to be drying out, use the misting bottle to lightly moisten the soil.
- 7). Remove the flat from the heat mat and remove the plastic bag when the seeds have sprouted. Transplant the seedlings into the garden six to eight weeks after germination. Portulaca prefers a sandy, slightly acidic soil and full sun.
