How to Propagate a Hibiscus in Water
- 1). Select a cutting from the hibiscus in the early summer, after the new growth has developed. Snip a 4 to 6 inch stem of new growth with pruning snips. Make the cut at an angle, just above a leaf.
- 2). Fill a clear glass jar or small vase with water. Clear glass is best, so that light can shine into the container.
- 3). Drop a 1/4 tsp. rooting hormone into the water. This improves your chances of rooting the hibiscus.
- 4). Snip the leaves off the bottom part of the cutting, leaving only two or three near the top. Also snip just a fraction off the bottom of the cutting where you made the original cut. It might have been five or more minutes since you cut the stem from the hibiscus, and having a fresh cut is best before placing it in water. Lean the cutting on the edge of the jar so that the top leaves left on the stem are above the lip of the jar and suspend the lower end of the stem off the jar bottom.
- 5). Place the container in a sunny spot on a windowsill. Slip the stem in the water and wait at least four weeks. Refill the water as it goes down and replace it once a week with fresh water. You should see roots in four to six weeks.
