How to Install Brick Replacement Windows
- 1). Remove double hung windows starting with the interior stop trim running vertically up the side jambs. Pry the stop away from the jamb with a wood chisel. Lift the lower sash from the window frame. Release the ropes from the top corners of the sash by pulling them from the notches in the side notches of the sash. Remove the separator stop between the lower and upper sash with the wood chisel, lift the upper sash from the frame and release the ropes from it. Release the sash from casement windows by removing the screws from the hinges at the top and bottom of the sash. Remove the hinges from the frame by removing the screws at the opposite end.
- 2). Lift sliding sashes from the frame by lifting up on the sash and tipping the bottom end of the sash out of the frame, allowing it to drop down free from the frame. Remove any latch hardware, screws and nails from the window frame to leave a clean opening for the new window.
- 3). Place shims in either corner of the window sill. Set the replacement window into the opening from the outside. Drive one nail through the trim ring at one top corner to fasten the window in place. Place a level on the sill and adjust the shims until the bubble is centered in the indicator of the level. Check the side jambs with the level on the face of each jamb, moving the bottom of the window in or out to center the bubble. Wedge shims between the window jamb and wall frame at top and bottom corners and at the center of each side.
- 4). Drill pilot holes through the jamb at each prefabricated fastener hole. Drive one mounting screw through each hole to anchor the window to the original frame. With a miter saw cut the inside trim to fit the inside of the window. Screw the trim to the face of the window to cover the gap between the replacement window and the original frame.
