Using Variety to Increase Functional Fitness

For many people, they're stuck in a training rut - doing the same type of exercise every day of every week. Not only is it repetitive, but it can be boring and you'll see a point of diminishing returns once your body has adapted to this stimulus.

They key to dominating your fitness, reaching new milestones, and never reaching a plateau is to implement many types of exercise into your program. This can be difficult because of time constraints and creativity limits, but there are a lot of options for you.

One example that I always like to use is that of distance runners. Many runners only run. They stick to the same pace every day, the same distance, and the same number of runs per week. And you know what happens? They never improve.

I like to advocate to runners that they take a short break from only running, and instead transition to a 3-4 month period where they train for triathlons. By using a sprint triathlon training program, or perhaps even a longer triathlon goal, you'll force your body to adapt to three different sports instead of just one.

Sprint triathlons are not only fun, but they challenge the body in many different ways and enable you to develop both lower and upper body fitness and strength. Swimming in and of itself is a full body workout, requiring great core strength, shoulder, arm, and chest power.

While running and cycling are similar, they use the leg muscles very differently. Consider training for a sprint triathlon as a way to boost your fitness and improve your engagement with your daily exercise. It's worth it!
