Thread the Needle and Tie a Knot

    • 1). Choose a needle with a large eye (the hole that the thread goes through) and regular sewing thread. Cut a 20-inch piece of thread from the spool.

    • 2). Hold one end of the thread in one hand and the needle in the other. Put the end of the thread in your mouth and pull it out between your lips to get the thread wet and make it stiff. Poke the end of the thread through the eye of the needle.

    • 3). Grab the thread on the other side of the eye and pull the thread through until the ends are even.

    • 4). Hold both ends of the thread between your thumb and finger with the ends pointing down.

    • 5). Grab the thread with your other hand and wrap it in a circle once around the finger that is holding the thread and the finger next to that one.

    • 6). Put the needle between your fingers through the thread circle, from the back of the circle to the front. Pull the thread clear through without letting go and put the needle through the circle one or two more times to make a bigger knot. Pull the thread tight to form the knot.

    Sew a Seam

    • 1). Cut two pieces of fabric to the same size square or rectangle. Draw a line across the back of one of the fabric pieces, 1/2 inch from one edge.

    • 2). Place the piece of fabric with the drawn line on top of the other fabric, with the pretty sides together and the edges even. Poke pins down through the layers of fabric and then back through to the front of the fabric along the line to hold the pieces together.

    • 3). Poke the needle from the front to the back through both layers of fabric, close to the start of the drawn line. Poke the needle through the fabric again, from the back to the front, about 1/4 inch away to form a stitch. Pull the thread smooth but not too tight and continue stitching along the line until you reach the other end, removing the pins as you go.

    • 4). Take another stitch over the last stitch at the end of the drawn line. Slide the point of the needle under the thread in the last stitch and pull the thread through partway, forming a loop of thread. Put the needle through the loop from the backside of the loop, pull the thread tight to form a knot, and cut the thread 1/2 inch above the knot.

    Sew a Button

    • 1). Hold the button with the backside against the front of the fabric with one hand, and hold the threaded needle in the other hand.

    • 2). Poke the needle through the fabric from the backside and through one of the holes in the button. Pull the thread tight and poke the needle back through another hole in the button. Repeat this process five or six times until the button is secure, ending with the needle on the backside of the fabric.

    • 3). Slip the point of the needle under the stitches on the backside of the fabric and pull the thread through partway, forming a loop. Put the needle through the loop from the backside of the loop, pull the thread tight to form a knot, and cut the thread 1/2 inch above the knot.
