Information on Marriage
- People who get married when they are teenagers are at the highest risk for divorce. Marriages between teenagers are two or three times more likely to end in divorce than marriages between older people.
- Married people build more wealth over their lifetime than single people or people who live together. According to Pittsburgh's Marriage Works Organization, this occurs in part because married men tend to make more money than single men doing the same job.
- In 2005, Percy and Florence Arrowsmith were placed in the Guinness Book of Records for having the world's longest marriage. The couple was married for 80 years.
- Married people have longer life expectancies than their single counterparts and are 1/3 less likely to commit suicide. Studies have indicated that, over a given period of time, the mortality rate for married people is 18 percent lower than that of singles.
- Marriage Works states that "...divorce (or failure to marry) appears to increase children's risk of school failure." Children are more likely to do poorly in school and less likely to graduate from college if their presnts get divorced.
