How to Sew a Split Hem
- 1). Use a seam ripper to rip the split hem 1-inch further, if the split is messy. The seam ripper makes a cleaner rip which is easier to repair. If the seam split cleanly, without frays or messy threads, skip this step. You can find a seem ripper at craft stores.
- 2). Trim away any unusable fabric. Use scissors to cut until you have a clean line with which to work.
- 3). Fold the fabric over to line up with the hem, so you have a smooth folded hem for the fabric. Secure the fold down with a few straight pins.
- 4). Thread a needle with about 12 inches of thread. Sew a blind stitch, a basic up and down stitch through the fabric, until the split hem area is repaired.
- 5). Pull the last stitch through the fabric and secure with a tight knot at the base of the fabric. Cut off the extra thread and remove straight pins.
