How to Modernize an Antique Sofa

    • 1). Remove the slipcovers from the cushions you sit on and take them to a seamstress for an estimate on their replacement cost. Choose fabric that accents the rest of the sofa but does not match completely for a more modern look. Replace the slipcovers once they are completed.

    • 2). Add accent pillows to the sofa in modern colors and patterns. You can find these at home stores or online. This is an easy way to update the sofa at a low cost.

    • 3). Replace wooden sofa legs with newer and more contemporary wooden versions or with metal legs. Turn the sofa onto its back and unscrew the legs. Screw the new legs into the existing holes. To ensure fit, take one of the old legs to the hardware or home store after you take it off the sofa.

    • 4). Polish any scratches in wooden portions of the couch with furniture polish for a newer appearance. Consider having wood that is damaged by scratches or discolorations refinished entirely. You could change the color of the stain to a lighter or darker color to modernize the sofa further.
