    Star Light, Star Bright

    • Star Light, Star Bright is a physical science experiment related to astronomy. The experiment studies how the brightness of a star changes due to distance. The project requires participants to create a model of starlight. The student will then observe the key relationship between brightness and distance. To complete the experiment, participants will need a lux (light) meter, a lamp with a round light board, among other items (see Resources). Using the inverse-square law, students will prove that as distance from a light source increases, its brightness decreases exponentially.

How Fast Does an Alka-Seltzer Tablet Make Gas

    • This science uses concepts learned in chemistry to explain the chemical reactions that occur when Alka-Seltzer tablets are dropped into water. The experiment measures the rate of the chemical reaction, including the volume of carbon dioxide gas produced at regular intervals after the reaction begins. The project also measures the effect of temperature on the rate of a chemical reaction. Adult supervision is required to complete this project (see Resources).

    What A Drag!

    • What A Drag! is a science project that uses aerodynamic and hydrodynamic concepts and properties. The project tests which ordinary objects around the house will move smoothly in the water, and which objects produce the most drag when pulled through the water. Using objects of different sizes and shapes, the participant notes the average force, resting force and drag that occurs on each object. The experiment increases awareness of the four main forces that always act upon moving objects: lift, weight, thrust and drag.

    Make Your Own pH Paper

    • This project is a simple experiment about acid/base chemistry. This project introduces the pH scale, which measures the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. The participant will make their own pH indicator paper using a pH sensitive dye that's found in red cabbage leaves. Then the student will measure the acidity/alkalinity of various common household solutions. Adult supervision is required to safely mix the various chemical-filled solutions (see Resources).
