How to Do the Hapkido Lapel Grab Defense
- 1). Kick the attacker in the shins. This is intended to distract the attacker from the real technique. For the split second after you kick the attacker in the shins he will be thinking about the pain. You can then perform the hapkido lapel grab defense quite easily.
- 2). Immediately grab one of the attacker's hands on your lapel with your opposite hand. You do this by reaching across your body over the top of both the attacker's arms. Place your palm on top of the back of the attacker's hand. It doesn't matter which hand you use if the attacker is holding your lapel with both hands. You just have to make sure you are grabbing the hand on the opposite side of your body. You are trying to prevent the attacker from pulling his hand away. You need his hand to complete the technique.
- 3). Throw your other arm completely over the top of your opponent's hands the other way. At the same time step back and turn your body sideways. You will be pivoting your body on your front leg. Keep throwing your arm over until the attacker's hand you are holding is under your arm pit.
- 4). Snap your body downward with all your weight. You must do this at the exact moment your opponent's hand that you are holding is at a right angle to the ground. The thumb must be pointed down and the little finger up. Since his hand is locked in by your arm pit and your hand, all your weight will come down on his wrist.
- 5). Slide your rear foot backward as you come down on the attacker's wrist. Sliding backward pulls the attacker off balance and focuses the impact on his wrist. If you do this in a fast, snapping motion the attacker's wrist will break.
