How Can You Tell If a Pumpkin Is Rotten?

    • 1). Observe the pumpkin to see if there are any visible cuts or chunks missing. The outside shell should be orange, green or a mixture of both. While there are green pumpkins, the color should be part of the shell and blend naturally. If the green appears to be growing in circular clumps, it may be mold or other diseases that cause rot. Traditional uses for pumpkins, such as pies and jack-o-lanterns, usually require pumpkins that are bright orange throughout.

    • 2). Touch the shell of the pumpkin and pay attention to the texture. The pumpkin should not be overly spongy, mushy or soft. The shell should be firm and smooth.

    • 3). Smell the pumpkin near the stem and on the bottom. If there is even a trace of a foul odor, the pumpkin is rotting. The smell will be quite pungent and noticeable.

    • 4). Feel the weight of the pumpkin. If the pumpkin seems excessively heavy and you can hear the sound of liquid moving around inside the pumpkin, it is rotten.
