How to Make a Simple Sun Catcher
- 1). Cover your work surface with newspaper or a plastic sheet to protect it from adhesive residue and sticky embellishments while you're creating the kids' craft.
- 2). Fold a 12-by-12-inch piece of card stock in half. Use a pencil and a stencil featuring a 4- to 6-inch shape to trace a shape onto the card stock. Try simple shapes such as hearts, ovals or diamonds.
- 3). Hold the folded card stock firmly so the two layers will stay together as you cut the shape out with scissors. You want to produce two identical shapes.
- 4). Cut out the inside of the two shapes using sharp scissors or a craft knife, 1/2 inch in from the edge. This will turn the card stock shapes into a 1/2-inch-wide "frame."
- 5). Set one of the two shapes aside. Place the other shape on top of a piece of colored cellophane and use scissors or a craft knife to cut around the shape.
- 6). Place one of the card stock shapes face down on your work surface. Apply a thin line of white glue onto the surface of the card stock. Place the cellophane on top of the shape and press its edges down onto the glue.
- 7). Apply a thin line of glue to the back of the second card stock shape and press it on top of the cellophane, "sandwiching" the colored paper between the card stock frames. Use scissors to trim the edges of the shape to ensure the edges are even and that none of the cellophane is sticking out. Allow the glue to dry for at least 30 minutes.
- 8). Create a hole at the top of the sun catcher using a 1/8-inch hand-held hole punch. Cut a 6-inch-long piece of string or clear fishing line with scissors. Push one end of the string through the hole and tie the ends together to form a loop.
