How to Make a 1/2 Circle Skirt
- 1). Measure your waist at the point on your body where you want your skirt to sit. Generally, half circle skirts sit just above the hips. Take that measurement and divide it by three and then subtract 1/2 inch. This will be the measurements of the fabric panels that make up the skirt.
Using the tape measure, measure the distance from your waist to the length you want your skirt to be and add an inch for the hem. - 2). Fold your fabric in half width wise with the right side together. Measure and mark the waist measurement you came up with at the each corner of the fabric opposite each other. Draw a diagonal line connecting these two marks.
- 3). Draw a semi-circle from one edge of the fabric to the other, joining the diagonal line that you marked. Measure down the fabric from the center of the waist semi-circle to the length of the skirt you measured. Draw another semi-circle at this point on the fabric.
- 4). Cut the waistband out of the remaining fabric. The waistband length will be your waist measurement plus 4 inches for seam allowances. Determine how wide you want the waistband to be in inches. Multiply this figure by two, then add 1 inch for the seams. Measure and cut a piece of fabric the length and width that you calculated.
- 5). Cut out the extra fabric at the top and bottom of both semi-circle marks to make one semi-circle piece of fabric for the skirt. Cut through both layers of the folded fabric.
- 6). Pin and sew a 5/8-inch seam along the open end of the fabric cut into the semi-circle shape with the wrong side facing out. Allow several inches at the smaller waist section for the zipper. Sew the zipper into place following the instructions that came with it.
- 7). Fold the waistband fabric in half lengthwise with the wrong side facing out and attach the interfacing to the fold on the wrong side. Measure and make the center of the waistband fabric on the wrong side, then measure and mark the center of the waistband of the skirt. Align the two center points, then pin the waistband to the skirt with the interfaced wrong side of the waistband attached to the right side of the skirt fabric. Sew the interfaced side of the waistband to the skirt using a 1/2-inch seam. Fold over the free end of the waistband over the waist of the skirt and sew it in place.
- 8). Finish the edges of the waistband by sewing a 1/4- inch seam. Attach a clasp to the waistband for closure following the instructions that came with the clasp.
- 9). Pin and sew a 1/2- inch hem at the bottom of the skirt.
