    • 1). Review decorating magazines for headboards you like. Choose a style that will work with your room.

    • 2). Place a tall sheet of cardboard the same width as your bed against the wall where a headboard would sit. Sketch the outline of the chosen headboard on the cardboard. Cut along the pencil lines to create a life-sized cardboard headboard.

    • 3). Pull your bed away from the wall to give you space to work. Line the floor against the wall with a drop cloth.

    • 4). Stick strips of double-sided tape on the back of the cardboard headboard and affix it to the wall behind your bed. Stand back and review the outline to ensure the size is proportionate to your room and there are no jagged edges or asymmetrical areas. Modify as needed with scissors until the size and shape are ideal.

    • 5). Tape the cardboard stencil in position on the wall behind your bed. Trace around it with a pencil to transfer the stencil to your wall.

    • 6). Paint over the pencil line with a small paintbrush to create the outline of your headboard. Fill in the body of the headboard with a larger brush, using vertical strokes.

    • 7). Paint highlights or embellishments as desired. Allow the paint to dry before pushing your bed back against the wall.
