How to Use Stonework on Models

    • 1). Use a razor knife to cut the Styrofoam to the basic shape you want. Cut and glue the additional shapes you need. For example, to create a wall for a house, cut a piece the size of the wall, then cut additional pieces the sizes of the windows and door. Glue pieces in place using white glue. Cut borders for the stonework object and glue these pieces to the side of the form. Allow the glue to set.

    • 2). Choose the stones, which are sold in blocks. Use ceramic tile nippers to cut them to the desired shapes. The smaller the size of the object you are building, the smaller the stones should be cut.

    • 3). Place the stones into the form leaving very little space between each stone. Fill in the form with stones until you reach the edges. Mix the stones cut from different stone tile blocks so the colors of the stone mix are spread uniformly throughout.

    • 4). Remove the mortared stone from the form. There should be a thin layer of mortar on the back of the stone object and some mortar between the stones so the face of the stone object appears as though it had been stacked and mortared stone by stone.

    • 5). Apply a layer of concrete sealant to the object with a paintbrush.

    • 6). Join the stone object to others in the model by applying a thin layer of mortar to the edge where the two objects meet.
