Choose clear alcohols like vodka, which smell less strongly than colored liquids, like whiskey. Stay away from beer, because beer often causes hiccups and belches.

Do not mix alcohols. Stick with one type, and the smell will be less noticeable.

Try eating foods that are strong in flavor and smell. Garlic and onion are classic choices. Wash them down with a caffeinated beverage like coffee or soda.

Chew gum. Choose a sour fruit kind, which will encourage saliva production; or a minty flavor with as much menthol as possible.

Clean your mouth. When you’re finished drinking, brush your teeth, floss, use a mouthwash and even try scraping your tongue. Getting your mouth squeaky clean will help to reduce stinky bacteria that were building up there.

Drink plenty of water, especially the day after you’ve been drinking. This will help to eliminate any smells that might be lingering.

As a last resort, try to distract people from the smell. You could put on plenty of heavy cologne or perfume, or you could tell people you’re sick and not to come too close.
