Lotus

• The lotus flower, which once adorned the flag of the ancient Egyptian army, represents innocent childhood. It is also believed that people would gather to feast in its honor in the hope that it would bring an abundance of the blossoms. Grown in the ponds of El-Fayoum, the plant has bright yellow, red, blue and white flowers held up on a stem that can reach 30 cm high. The plant is used medicinally to reduce inflammations and as a sedative.
  
  

Chickpea

• The chickpea is known for its flowers and high-protein fruits, which are used in vegetarian dishes, salads and soups. Coming from upper Egypt, the grass of this plant can be 30 to 50 cm tall, with flowers ranging from white to red.
  
  

Pomegranate

• The pomegranate is another blossom that grows on a food-producing botanical. The pomegranate has reddish, pentagonal blossoms that grow alongside large red and green fruits. The pomegranate was known for being used in "collars," which were rings of fresh plants and flowers worn by Egyptians during the 18th dynasty.
  
  

Sunflower

• The large blossoms of the sunflower adjusting their petals according to the position of the sun. As its name suggests, the sunflower features a large, round orb that bears bright yellow petals held on a stem reaching 6 feet tall.
  
  

Papyrus

• The papyrus was offered to the gods in the Pharaonic temples and stood for the union between upper and lower Egypt. With its roots immersed deep in the mud, the plant produces flowers in red, purple and blue. The papyrus symbolizes fertility and life, which is why its shape can be found mimicked in architecture.
